Now that we are onto the second half of the year I thought it would be fun to do my top 5 favourites of the year so far! For a recap of my reading year until now, I have read 41 books, I have given twelve 5 stars, thirteen 4 stars, eleven 3 stars, three 2 stars, and one 1 star. Although, there’s one or two that I would adjust ratings for. This year I would say has been pretty good considering how many books are rated high. The list is in the order of what I read starting from January until now.
Like in every post, I will include the Goodreads link for every book if you want to check out the synopsis. Do you like my pictures? They’re all from my Bookstagram account! Click the link below if you want to follow me!
Let’s get into it!
First, is The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner (Goodreads)
I actually read this twice this year. I didn’t like it very much right after finishing the book the first time, I actually thought it was kind of boring and lacked female presence. Although, the latter is still true, my opinion of the book has changed. I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since January when I first read it. On the second read, I picked up things that I never would have noticed the first time I picked it up. I will say my review of the book is still true about it being thought provoking and I loved the dynamic between characters and how it changed throughout the book. A Darker Shade of Magic by V. E. Schwab (Goodreads)
Funny thing about this book, I actually tried to read it last year and hated my experience. I kept forgetting some of the stuff that was going on and I didn’t understand other things. I just gave up part way through. Looking back, I think I was just trying to read it as fast as possible instead of taking my time and just enjoy reading. This year, I gave it another chance and I’m so glad I did. I read it as a buddy read and I annotated as I read. On the second try, I fell in love and as you can see in the picture I proceed to buy as many special editions as I could, haha! Since finishing, I’ve taken up reading ever Schwab book. I recently finished This Savage Song and I just bought Vicious. She is quickly becoming a favourite of author of mine. For my full review, click here.
Orphan Monster Spy by Matt Killeen (Goodreads)
This year, I have been trying to expand my reading more and I have been craving some historical fiction. I LOOOVEEEDD this book. I want to re-read it already! It was a well written WWII book, had some great characters, the main character’s name was Sarah, and some awesome intense scenes. Sarah was especially great, witty and intuitive. I liked how there were German words throughout the book. I had fun looking up the words for the pronunciation, and sometimes definitions. I can now say stupid bitch in German, haha. Obsidio by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (Goodreads)
This was the concluding book to an epic series! This is a sci-fi book, I don’t read much sci-fi and I loved it! I don’t want to say much else being that it’s a sequel. All three books had crazy, mind-blowing twists and characters that I will always love. If you want to know more of my thoughts including favourites in the series, click here.
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid (Goodreads)
This is a new favourite of all time. This is the bisexual book that I needed. The book follows a movie star who tells her life story to a journalist for her biography. This book made me feel so much! I sobbed; I cried clutching the book to my chest. Funny how a book can emotionally break you and becomes a all-time favourite. It it such a great story that I hope everyone will read (and enjoy) it. The story pulled me in so much that I wanted Evelyn to be a real person where I could Google her and watch her movies. For my full, gushing review, click here.
Well, that’s it for now!!
As always, thanks for reading!
