The Chaos of Longing by K. Y. Robinson: Book Review

You might recall that at the beginning of December I hosted my own weekend readathon! I had a lot of fun doing it and this book was the first thing I finished that weekend. The Chaos of Longing is a poetry collection with themes like sexual assault, body image, and relationships (Goodreads).

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

For poetry I have a hard time rating because it’s the writer’s personal experiences written as raw and truthful. So I rate it base on how much I aligned with how many poems. I feel I can’t really speak of the writing and structure of the poems since I haven’t read too many. If you have a suggestion to better rate poetry, I would love to hear it in the comments!

I appreciate Robinson’s hard work and at times, a hard life. Her poetry tells a story of a life of struggle with a few good moments in there too. Overfall, I felt the collection had vivid imagery, and I can see the value her words even if they don’t speak to me directly. I would like to share one of her poems that did speak to me called Smitten:

i love losing myself
inside of you.
i am too smitten by your landscape
to retrace my steps
or ask for directions.
i want to stay here
for a while
before reality
sets in.

I enjoy the imagery and description, but also remembering those moments with your partner where you didn’t want it to end. Where you can blissfully happy in that moment and completely smitten.

As always, thanks for reading!
