The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson: Book Review

Good hello, and happy Thursday! I did it! I finally read The Final Empire! This has been on my shelf for at least a year, but I’ve been too intimidated to pick it up. The Tome Topple readathon (the goal is always to read books over 500 pages) helped encourage me to pick it up. It was the last day of the readathon, but I still wanted to use the motivation it gave to at least read 100 pages so that’s what I did and kept going. It. Was. So. Jaw-dropping. Amazing.

I feel like everyone has heard of The Mistborn series, but in case there’s someone who hasn’t.. The first book is about if the Dark Lord won and ruled for a 1000 years and some people with certain bloodlines can control metal (Goodreads).

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Sure, it’s a hella long book and so is the next book in the series, but just going based on The Final Empire: it’s worth it. There’s so much going on that I feel like I need to reread it to really appreciate the level of detail in everything. Sanderson knows how to write a beautiful world with complex and fascinating characters and plot. There’s a lot of politics that I didn’t know if I would care about, but it added to the story more than expected.

For the most part, every character was dynamic and a major part of the story. I loved Vin and Kelsier; they were wonderful views to read from and explain the world and the inner workings of the magic system through an expert and a novice. I’m such a sucker for characters who want to help others and make the world a better place. I’m glad for it, shows how anyone of any social standing can make change.

I’m currently reading The Raven King and Starry Eyes. Once I have finished those two I’m going to pick up The Well of Ascension which is book 2 of the series, and I’m so excited!

As always, thanks for reading!
