Top 10 Disappointing Reads of 2018

Now that I have done my favourites (click here to read), I thought it would be fun to do what I thought didn’t live up expectations. This is just my opinion, please don’t be offended.

1. Grip by Kennedy Ryan Rating: 2/5 Stars

The main character got under my skin. How can you be so clueless of the world around you? I know there’s people out there like this, but she’s suppose to be in the music industry of the book’s universe is a fake one, then fine. But music is part of media, just look at Childish Gambino’s song This is America.

2. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas Rating: 2/5 Stars

I’ve mentioned this a few times now that I didn’t like this, but I couldn’t not have it on this list. I’m still planning to continue since to Court of Mist and Fury, and a lot of people tell me it’s the best which is a lot of hype (maybe too much? We’ll see!). There’s a few reasons why I didn’t like it but my main issue is (spoiler) the drugging. I can’t agree or let be reasoned away that she was drugged, taking her choice, her agency away.

3. Batman: Nightwalker by Marie Lu Rating: 2/5 Stars

To put it bluntly, it was pretty lame. The tension and really the story overall was weak. I was expecting Batman to be about Batman, like him just getting his suit and helping catch bad guys, but that’s not what this is. Just wasn’t for me.

4. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas Rating: 1/5 Stars

Yeah, another Maas book on this list. After reading this and ACOTAR I agree she doesn’t have diverse characters, at least not shown positively. I hated how the main character was so needed validation male characters. Also, how she commented on her body. I could see how that could be triggering for someone with an eating disorder. Oh, and if she’s suppose to be the best assassin at only 17, why is she so not smart?

5. The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin Rating 3/5 Stars

Okay, I did like this, but I was disappointed in the audiobook. It was very confusing at times of what was happening because you get thrown into a conversation and don’t know how you got there. I rewinded multiple of times only to discover that I didn’t in fact miss anything. I think if i read the physical book it was have been easier to follow the story, but a whole lot better since I got feedback about reading the physical book and it was still pretty jarring at times.

6. Dress Codes for Small Towns by Courtney C. Stevens  Rating: 3/5 Stars

Another case of a book not living up to my expectations. Also, I think it was the setting, I never knew what a small town life is like so that aspect was hard for me to relate to. To put it bluntly, I was bored for half the book. The struggles of the main character and her friend group, I didn’t care for. Although, there were a few moments i appreciated about sexuality, but that’s it. Didn’t think the book was anything to write home about in the end.

7. The Secret Loves Of Geek Girls by Various of Authors Rating: 3/5 Stars

This was another boring book. I hate to say it, but it was slow. I can appreciate what the short stories represent and how the can help a lot of people, just wasn’t for me. I really loved the comic/ graphic novel stories, however, the stories with regular pros were non-fiction and again, slow.

8. A Gathering of Shadows by V. E. Schwab Rating: 3/5 Stars

So I finished this during a time I was having a falling out with Schwab, which definitely affected my enjoyment of this book. However, I think I still would have been completely meh about this book anyway because all it is is a tournament. I felt nothing happened other than introduced a couple new characters for the next and final book.

9. Vengeful by V. E. Schwab Rating: DNF

I did a whole blog post as to why I DNF’ed this book, which you can find here. I think i do a better job there explaining everything then I would in this post in a couple of sentences.

10. Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris Rating: 2/5 Stars

I feel this series just got to a point where Harris was trying to suck every last dollar out of it. This book is a mess, and very forgetful. I don’t remember much of what happens. i do remember that it was ridiculous and so far from the beginning of series in quality and overall story arc.

As always, thanks for reading!
